In the novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” Khaled Hosseini utilizes the theme and the setting to display the diverse and complex relationships between genders which displays a sense of shame. Although the women are forced to do things out of their will with the opposite gender that leads to shame, such as “not making eye contact with men, attending school,” or being “caught alone on the street” and being “beaten and sent home”, the women forge strong bonds with the same gender despite the efforts of their husbands and their government to reduce women’s power. Nana is mistreated by Jalil’s wives and shows hatred toward them and Jalil in return to seek strength from her daughter Mariam.
